Udaipur is a beautiful city in the state of Rajasthan and the city was founded by Maharaja Udai Singh in 1559. Needless to say, the city got its name after the name of its founder. The place is known for the royal residences, hotels, and resorts and the artificial lakes which surround it. The most popular landmark here is the City Palace which overlooks Lake Pichola and has 11 palaces in its premise.

It was the historic capital of the Kingdom of Mewar in the earlier times. It is located in the southernmost part of the state close to Gujarat border. The Aravalli Range separates the city from the Thar Desert. The city is 660 km from Delhi and 800 km from Mumbai. The city has seven lakes and is popularly known as the City of Lakes. Out of these Lake Pichola. Fateh Sagar, Swarup Sagar, Doodh Talai, and Rangsagar are getting restored by the Government of India. Other well-known places in the region are museums, palaces, galleries, forts, and architectural temples. Educational institutions are comprising of 5 Universities, 14 colleges, and more than 150 schools. The development in the region post-independence has been phenomenal and the city has emerged as one of the most sought-after tourist centers for the tourists.

The total population in the city, as per 2011 census in 4, 74,531. Hindi and Mewari are the major languages spoken in the region. The climate is hot and arid. It experiences the main seasons like summer, monsoon, and winter. As it is close to the desert, the climate is generally hot. The summer months are mid-March to June with high temperatures and the mercury goes as high as 44 degree Celsius. As there are greenery and lakes around, the city attracts monsoon early and prevails till October. The winters are cool and the temperature dips to 5 degree Celsius.

Nathdwara Temple is about 60 km from Udaipur which is much frequented by the tourists. Because of the mesmerizing beauty of the area and the presence of Lakes, the region is also called the Venice of East.

CULTURE OF UDAIPUR

The presence of temples, lakes, forts, and museums boasts of rich cultural heritage in the city. The locals are engaged in the celebration of various festivals like Gangaur, Teej, Holi, Diwali, Shilpgram Utsav, Jagannath Rath Yatra, Jal-Jhulni Ekadashi, etc. The area beams with folk dances like Ghoomar, Kalbelia, and Kachchii Ghodi. The locals can strike a perfect balance between traditions and urban lifestyle. The fairs and festivals held in the city attract the attention of the tourists as well. The music popular in the city is Morchang, Tanpura, Sarangi, Naad, and several other instruments.

HISTORY OF UDAIPUR

Maharaja Udai Singh II is the founder of the city and it came forth in the year 1559. It was established as the capital of Mewar Kingdom. Udaipur was attracting the prying eyes of the Mughal emperors and to protect it from external attacks, the Maharaja decided to construct a 6 km long city wall. Seven gates are also built. The premise within the wall and the gate is still considered as the Old City area. Sisodia rulers also captured the area, except Chittor.

Udaipur became the Princely State in 1818 under British rule. As the region was mostly mountainous, it was difficult for the horses to trudge on the path. Hence it remained safe from the clutches of Mughal invasion until British rule. Currently, Maharana Mahendra Singh Mewar is the 76th custodian of the Mewar Dynasty.
